Abhyangam

Traditional ayurveda massage is usually called as Abhyangam. Normally done with oils,
prepared from specific herbs. Each oil serves each purpose. Doing abhyanga(oil massage)
daily will be highly beneficial for old aged people and people who work hard, or got tired by
heavy exercise. It improves vision and skin texture, also gives healthy body and healthy life.
Mainly help to control vata kopa.

Steam

Podikizhi

Also called choorna panda sweda, is a sweating therapy for pain relief in ayurveda.

 

Churna/Podi means powder (herbal), Pinda means bolus, Swedana is sweat inducing
treatment. Podi kizhi is a treatment in which herbal powders having analgesic, anti-
degenerative and anti-inflammatory properties are used for fomentation (sweat inducing) of
painful parts.

 

In this treatment, the herbal powders prepared by pounding the medicinal drugs which can
relieve pain and associated conditions (having analgesic, anti-degenerative and anti-
inflammatory properties) are heated or fried in herbal oils, to tolerable temperature and are
tied in a bolus. The bolus is heated in a pan or dipped in herbal oils being heated at a less
constant temperature in pans. The heated bolus is continuously rubbed over the pain afflicted
areas. Different churna’s are selected for different stages of the disease.
This is very useful in diseases like Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lumbar spondylosis,
Cervical spondylosis, Musculoskeletal pains, Myalgia etc.

Elakizhi

Also called, Patra panda sweda. Patra/Ela means leaves, Pinda/Kizhi means bolus. Swedana
is sweat inducing treatment.

In this treatment, the leaves of medicinal plants, having analgesic and anti-inflammatory
properties are heated or fried in herbal oils to tolerable temperature and tied in a bolus. The
bolus is heated in a pan or dipped in herbal oils being heated at a los constant temperature in
pans. The heated bolus is continuously rubbed over the pain afflicted areas. This treatment is
generally preferred in the absence of ama (intermediate products of digestion and cell
metabolism, circulating or tissue toxins which get adhered in the cells due to their sticky
nature, block the channels and transport systems of the body and cause pain and stiffness) or
done after getting rid of ama through other treatments.
Patra Pinda Sweda is an unparalleled treatment in Vata morbidity or any inflammatory
diseases of joints and soft tissues. Morbid Kapha and its symptoms like catches, heaviness,
coldness etc can be got rid of by using Kapha destroying leaves in the Kizhi.

Dhanyamla Kizhi

Dhaanyamla = is a decoction prepared by fermenting/boiling cereals and other herbal
medicines. In this therapy the herbal powder suitable for the condition is selected and is
heated. It is made into a bolus. This bolus is heated by dipping in hot dhaanyamla and applied
over effected area.

Navarakizhi

Also known as Shashtika Sali panda sweda.

Njavara/sashtika sali is a verity of rice, which is highly nourishing. This rice is cocked with
medicated decoction and milk, then is made into a kizhi (bolus). This is heated by dipping in
hot milk and applied to the effected area for certain time. The effect is almost similar to
Njavara dhaara.

This is highly nourishing therapy. And should be done under advice of an expert.

Mamsa Kizhi

Mamsa = muscle. Here the bolus is prepared with muscle cocked with herbs and it is heated
with medicated milk. This is used to apply heat on the effected area. This is also a nourishing
therapy. More beneficial in muscle wasting, weakness due to stroke, paralysis etc.

Muthira Kizhi

Muthira = horse gram. Here bolus made with cocked horse gram and other herbs that help to
reduce the vata dosha is used. This bolus is heated with little oil, and applied on the effected
area for certain period of time. It help to reduce the pain, in musculo skeletal region. Pain due
to accident, injury etc.

Mutta Kizhi

Also known as anda Sweda. Mutta is Malayalam word for egg. So in this procedure egg is the
chief ingredient.

 

Here the kizhi/bolus is prepared with Egg as the main ingredient. Along with which other
analgesic and anti inflammatory herbs are selected. They are heated with suitable herbal oil
and bolus is prepared. The Bolus is made to rub over each adjacent parts of the body for  a
certain period of time, so that ample heat is transferred to patients body through the contents
of bolus.

 

This is indicated in Muscular atrophy, muscular weakness, stiff joints and joint pain. Mutta
Kizhi is very effective in facial paralysis and hemiplegia.

Manal Kizhi

Manal = Sand. Here the bolus is prepared with clean neat sand which is obtained from sea
sore. It should be washed and cleaned thoroughly. This sand bolus is heated directly with
brass vessel, and the heat is applied over the effected area. It is mostly used in condition
where there is severe swelling and stiffness. That is association of Ama (toxins). In this
condition using oil is contra indicated.

Uppu Kizhi

Uppu = salt. The bolus is prepared with salt. This bolus is heated and applied over the
effected are for certain time. This is used mainly for pain management. Like
vatakantaka(calcaneal spur).

Dhanyamla Dhara

Dhanyamla Dhara means stream pouring of liquids obtained by fermenting/boiling cereals
and other herbal medicines over the body of the patient. It helps to remove, metabolic toxins
formed due to errors of metabolism that clog cells and channels of the body and disturb the
smooth functioning of the cells and organs.

Benefits
Relief in pain, swelling and stiffness associated with many systemic diseases, especially in
rheumatological conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Low back pain, Myalgia and many types of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal diseases. Obesity and over-weight conditions, Frozen Shoulder, Musculo-skeletal pains etc.

Takradhara

Tailadhara

In this treatment, the warm medicated oil is poured in a continuously flowing single stream,
all over the body for certain period of time in certain direction. Duration is relative to the
intensity of disease and strength of the patient.

Improves circulation to muscles and lubricates the joints.
Reduces the pain and stiffness in Arthritis, osteoporosis, sciatica, spondylosis
Hemiplegia, paraplegia, general weakness, muscle wasting etc.
Other musculo-skeletal and neurological problems.

Kashaya Dhara

Kashaya means medicated decoction which is prepared by boiling herbs and water in
certain ratio and Dhara means pouring. This treatment is a kind of sedation therapy using
herbal decoction. This is a process by which the body is made to perspire by means of
pouring warm decoction with a special vessel from a certain height in rhythmic manner and is
rubbed into the body. This method removes ‘ama’ or toxins from the tissues and promotes fat
metabolism, removes tension from muscles and also alleviates pain and stiffness of the joints
and muscles, Fibromyalgia etc.

Benefits

  • This treatment is mainly indicated for treatment of skin disease such as psoriasis, eczema, some scalp lesions and also prevention of hair fall.
  • Improves the delayed wound healing.
  • Varicose ulcer.

Nyavara Dhara

Also known as Shashtika Sali dhaara.
Njavara/sashtika sali is a verity of rice, which is highly nourishing. Here the njavara verity of
rice is cocked with herbal decoction and milk. This rice is made as liquid form and poured
over the body for certain minutes. This is highly nourishing therapy. And should be done
under advice of an expert.

Ksheera Dhara

Pouring of lukewarm medicated milk in a regular stream from a height of 4 angula (inches)
all over the body for a specific period of time and with a specific pattern is called as Sarvanga
Ksheera dhara.

Under this process cow’s milk is used, where various herbs are added to make the milk
completely medicinal. It is regarded as the important therapy among Kerala special Ayurvedic treatments.

Sirovasti

Greeva Vasti

Thus Greeva Vasti means a treatment in which medicated oils are poured and pooled for a
fixed duration of time in a compartment constructed over the nape of the neck (back side of
the neck) using wet flour of black gram.

If your job and posture are bad enough to predispose for recurrent episodes of neck pain and
stiffness, you need to take preventive ‘Greeva Vasti’ sessions.

Duration of the course –

of the disease. Treatment is done for a period of 30-45 minutes per session (Treatment
duration will extend beyond this if it is combined with other treatments)

Uro Vasti

Urovasti is a specialized treatment which is done for effectively combating the respiratory
and circulatory diseases. Uro Vasti means a treatment in which medicated oils are poured and
pooled for a fixed duration of time in a compartment or a cabin constructed over the chest
area using wet flour of black gram, covering the areas of heart and lungs.

(Treatment duration will extend beyond this if it is combined with other treatments)

 

Benefits
Vatika Kasa or Vataja Kasa – Dry, hacking, painful cough (little or no phlegm is produced,
associated with chest and throat pain, produces heavy sounds), Whooping cough, Bronchitis,
smokers cough, allergic cough, seasonal cough especially that which occurs or worsens in
monsoon, cough exacerbated by consumption of excessive cold and dry foods etc can be
considered in this type of kasa. Problem with your lungs or airways like an asthma attack, pneumonia (lung inflammation) or worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Note – it should be done after advised by an ayurveda doctor.

Kati vasti

In this process, specially prepared warm medicated oil is kept over the lower back
with herbal paste boundary. This treatment lasts for 30 minutes to 1 hour depending upon the
need. This treatment can be taken as preventive therapy for low back pain, by those who sit,
stand and walk for long hours. The best results are obtained by doing kati vasti along with
kizhi (with doctors advice).

Spinal Vasti

This Is an extended version of greeva vasti and kati vasti. Here a cabin is constructed
covering the entire spine. Then warm medicated oil is poured and retained for certain period
of time. The oil is always kept warm by occasionally changing and heating.
It will be more effective if Podi kizhi or ila kizhi is added to it as post operative procedure.

  • It is best for those having cervical spondylosis and lumbar spondylosis.
  • Good for thoracic spine injury.
  • Osteo-arthritis in cervical and lumbar region etc.

Janu Vasti

Janu Vasti means a treatment in which medicated oils are poured and pooled for a fixed
duration of time in a compartment or a cabin constructed around the knee joint / joints using
wet flour of black gram.

When Janu Vasti is combined with effective treatments like Abhyanga (massage with herbal
oils), Patra Pinda Sweda (leaf bolus fomentation) and Vasti (medicated enemas) etc and
disease modifying drugs and compounds, it provides a very good relief in many painful knee
conditions like Osteoarthritis etc. It gives a magical relief from the pain and stiffness
associated with knee pain. In many cases Jaanu Vasti provides a long standing relief.

Udwarthanam

Udwarthanam is a powder massage. The word is having two parts, urdhwa = upwards
varthana = direction. The name indicates the direction of massage. It is opposite to the normal
Abhyanga (massage) done in Ayurveda. To be exact, opposite to the direction of hair
follicles. It is done with herbal powders, paste made of powder and oil/juice/kashayam etc.
It reduces excess kapha in the body, help to reduce the fatty tissue which is the best for reducing over weight. It gives stability to body, gives nourishment and improve lustre of skin, reduces foul smell, control over weight, control excess sweat, itching etc.
